Social Security

Some families may be able to obtain help from the Governments’ Social fund to contribute towards the cost of a funeral.

In all cases, the amount paid by the Department of Work and Pensions will not cover the total cost of the funeral.
The person who has instructed the funeral arrangements would be responsible for payment of any remaining balance.
Should the claim be unsuccessful, they would then be responsible for payment of the full account.

If you are eligable to receive one of the following benefits, you may be entitled to assistance towards to cost of the funeral:
  • Income Support
  • Income based jobseeker's allowance
  • Income -related employment and support allowance
  • Council Tax Benefit
  • Housing Benefit
  • Pension credit
  • Working Tax Credit which includes a disability or severe disability element.
  • Child Tax Credit at a higher rate than the family element.

Clients should check with the DWP

A claim must be made within three months after death but it is advisable to lodge the claim as soon as possible, as late claims will not be accepted by the DWP and any entitlement will be lost.
